I love these. I usually wear a medium in athletic shorts or a 10 in jeans but I ordered an XL in these shorts. I'm a middle-aged mom of three so I did not want the shorts too short on me; so the XL gave me the added length I needed. Thus far, I've ordered 3 pairs of these shorts. I am on the tall side, 5'9'', and usually wear size 14 pants, and those pants do fit me just right. I was concerned about waist being a bit high, but it is still comfortable to wear and did not feel like I am being strangled. I have to use a belt with the pants, but it is true for most pants I wear since I have smaller waist and most pants gape at the back.
