Update: still wearing these shorts and are still holding up well after a gazillion washes :)Hands down, my favorite shorts I have ever owned. When you first put them on, they are a bit snug on the hips, but after a few minutes, seems to adjust well. These shorts are a great length; I’m a mom, but still enjoy shorter shorts :) . I love these swim shorts. I didn’t want them super tight or too loose. I purchased small and medium and they both fit very similar but I went with med since you can tighten the waist. I’ve worn them a lot and purchased a second pair.

I like the shorts, my problem is that I sized up after reading reviews. I am 5'3, 165lbs... heavy on the booty and thick thighs. I like my shorts bigger, but these might be a little too big. I ordered an XL, and I have no doubt that a L or maybe even M would fit fine. The legs have slits in the sides, which help them to not fit so tight. The waist seems really big, too. They are super stretchy. I'm not sure I'll keep these, but I might exchange them for a smaller size.
